Volunteering and it's impact on the perceptions of teenagers

My blog has established that volunteering helps teenagers and young adults - that's undeniable.  What we haven't looked at so far is that young people's widespread participation in voluntary activities helps to change the perception and attitudes of others. Active participation in volunteering projects by young people shows the older generation of people that youth today are not all agressive, drug and alcohol abusers but smart individuals that want to further themselves and the community they live in. Do you think young people are often treated unfairly with regards to the pre-judgements made by others and if you feel that is the case, is volunteering really the solution to change the attiudes and beliefs of the older generations towards young people?

  1. I have to agree. Young people today are stereotyped especially "hoodies" but TV shows like Britain's Got Talent and others expose how talented and determined a lot of young people are. We should start focusing on the positive things that young people are doing rather than the negatives, this way, hopefully we will begin to see more positive work coming from young people.

  2. Young people are stereotyped by the older generation but I can't see that greater involvement in volunteering will change these attitudes. Let's face it older people like to have a moan and will always find something to moan about. I think the majority of young people in this country are doing really positive things. Look at all the proportion of young people going into further education for instance, give them a break.

  3. Personally I think it comes down to upbringing. It's all about respect and young people just don't seem to respect their elders. A lot of them think the world owe's them a favour. Volunteering helps young people reconnect with society and teaches them to give back to their community and support the older people within it.
