A smart presentation about empowering young people through the use of the web.
Using the web to promote positive activities for young people
Makes sense really. So many young people spend hours of their time online, its obvious that communication activities need to be tailored in a way that effectively reaches out to this audience. I am however, concerned about how the information in this presentation can be applied to encouraging more young people to get involved in volunteering projects in their local communities. But, as the presentation says "We believe that people should have access to quality information to empower and support them in the choices they make". I suppose that if more positive information on the benefits volunteering are geared towards young people on the web we may start see an influx of young people getting more involved in volunteering projects like Vinvolved. Watch this space!

Hi Cat, I share your concern, young people spend so much of their time on the web nowadays, it makes me wonder should we be concentrating our efforts on discouraging this type of behaviour rather than putting more material on the web for them. Hm, it's a tough one!
ReplyDeleteI think that it's really important to help young people make a positive contribution to their local communities and Vinvolved is just one organisation that is doing this. A lot of my volunteers heard about our organisation through the web, from social networking sites or from our own site; showing that the Internet is helping to provide more opportunities for young people. Young people can then experience the benefits that volunteering creates like increased self-confidence, a boost to their CV and the chance to meet new people. The internet is only a positive in this situation.

I agree. The web provides lots of people with greater opportunities and increases participation. Social networking sites and blogs like this one for instance, help to raise awareness of volunteering projects and the benefits they can bring among young people therefore increasing participation in projects in the REAL world, haha. Get work! Emz.
ReplyDeleteThanks, a great response on this issue. It would be good to hear more about how the internet helps to provide young adults with greater opportunities, so keep them coming!
ReplyDeleteYes great discussion. The Internet enables speed of communication and access to information. The web allows young people to overcome geographical barriers presenting them with greater opportunities and a means to broaden their horizons. Of course, like anything there are risks but as they say - everything in moderation.

Thanks Jon, good point on the Internet overcoming geographical barriers, can you expand on just how this can present young people with more oppportunities?
