Closing the Generational Gap...is volunteering really the answer to our problems?

A great thing about volunteering is that is can foster relationships between different people and help close the gap between generations both old and young. Better relationships between different age groups will encourage older generations to pass on their traditions and values to younger people while also reducing alienation between generations.

Do you think volunteering has the ability to strengthen communities and the groups of people within them? Does it have a positive impact on helping people connect to one another, or does more need to be done to improve community relations?

  1. I too think it's important that we try and strengthen the relationships between old and young. Personally, I think it comes down to respect. Young people simply do not respect the older people in their communities and this stems from upbringing and education I'm afraid. Let's hope the next Government who comes in to power recognises and tries to solve this problem.

  2. Thanks Shaun, respect is something that keeps popping up in these discussions. Head to a more recent blog post where I look at David Cameron's proposal to get more young people involved in volunteering, here's the link... http://portchesterv.blogspot.com/2010/04/can-david-cameron-really-get-young.html#comments
